چکیده

The FERMI@ELETTRA project is an initiative from ELETTRA, INFM and other Italian institutes, to construct a single-pass FEL user-facility for the wavelength range from 100 nm (12 eV) to 10 nm (124 eV), to be located next to the third-generation synchrotron radiation facility ELETTRA in Trieste, Italy. The project is concentrated around the existing 1.2-GeV S-band linac, i.e., the injector for the storage ring. Normally the linac operates approximately 2 hours per day. The remaining time is available for the construction and operation of an FEL but modifications and operation must be planned such that operation of the storage ring can be guaranteed until the completion of a new full-energy injector (2006). A request for funding has been granted. In anticipation of the arrival of money, the project now evolves from a conceptional design stage towards a technical design and the actual implementation. Key issues are: incorporation of the free-electron laser in the infrastructure of the Sincrotrone Trieste, adjustments of the linac to facilitate FEL operation, required additional civil engineering, undulator design, FEL seeding options, and beamline design.

Tunability experiments at the FERMI@Elettra free-electron laser

FERMI@Elettra is a free electron-laser (FEL)-based user facility that, after two years of commissioning, started preliminary users’ dedicated runs in 2011. At variance with other FEL user facilities, FERMI@Elettra has been designed to deliver improved spectral stability and longitudinal coherence. The adopted scheme, which uses an external laser to initiate the FEL process, has been demonstrate...

Design and First Experience with the Fermi Seed Laser

Fermi@Elettra is the first fully seeding-based FEL. Laser operation was first demonstrated in December 2010 and later consistently studied during the runs in 2011. As it is known the seeded operation puts heavy demands on the seed laser performance. This paper describes the design of the FERMI seed laser system, including the main laser as well as the most important sub-systems and the issues t...

Extreme ultraviolet multilayer for the FERMI@Elettra free electron laser beam transport system.

In this work we present the design of a Pd/B₄C multilayer structure optimized for high reflectance at 6.67 nm. The structure has been deposited and also characterized along one year in order to investigate its temporal stability. This coating has been developed for the beam transport system of FERMI@Elettra Free Electron Laser: the use of an additional aperiodic capping layer on top of the stru...

Measurements of Fel Polarization at Fermi

We report detailed quantitative characterization of different polarization states of a single-pass, externallyseeded FEL operating with variable polarization undulators in the VUV spectral range. The experiment has been performed at FERMI FEL-1 operated in the 52–26 nm wavelength range. Three different, independent polarimeter setups, installed at the end of experimental beamlines, have been us...

First operation of a harmonic lasing self-seeded free electron laser

Harmonic lasing is a possible mode of operation of X-ray FEL user facilities that allows us to provide brilliant beams of higher energy photons for user experiments. Another useful application of harmonic lasing is the so-called harmonic lasing self-seeded free electron laser (HLSS FEL) that allows the improvement of spectral brightness of these facilities. In the past, harmonic lasing has been...
